Mike Manglona of the Department of Public Health recently engaged sixth-graders from San Vicente Elementary School in an animated presentation on the whats-and-wherefores of the human immunodeficiency virus and its resulting disease, AIDS.

Gathered under a program sponsored by the AIDS and Science Division of the PSS headed by Jackie Quitugua, the students discussed issues that relate to health, at-risk behavior, drugs, discrimination and peer pressure.

Held Friday, May 14, 2004 at Charley’s Cabaret of the Pacific Island Club, the morning began with information sharing from staff of CREES-NMC headed by Liza Benavente. Their presentation on the number of teaspoons of sugar and fat contained in popular drinks and food elicited numerous “ooohs,” “wows,” and “ouchs” from the enthralled listeners. The high incidence of diabetes on island was not lost on the young audience.

The dynamic duo of NMPASI’s Tom Thornburgh and Greg Borja led the group to see the insidious effect of discrimination on social health and well-being.

The event was planned and implemented by SVES principal Janet C. Villagomez, and vice principal Jim Rayphand. On her context for the day, Villagomez reminded the group of the importance of a healthy body as a prerequisite to a healthy mind.

Rayphand previously surveyed the students on which health related issues students wanted discussed during the conference. He presented the corrupting influence of peer pressure, noting that the same can also be turned around as a positive force towards appropriate behavior. Rayphand was lead facilitator for the whole event.

Teen Health Day, as the event was billed on campus for the sixth graders, launched a weeklong series of activities that include a four-day Retreat May 17-20. A culminating Fun and Reunion Night will take place Friday, May 21, for all students, parents and community supporters of the San Vicente Elementary School.
