The Marianas Visitors Authority’s board of directors has announced the selection of Vicky Benavente to replace Jonas Ogren as the managing director of the Marianas Visitors Authority, effective June 15, 2004. After two years with the agency, Ogren will be leaving his post to return to his home in Sweden.

At their regularly scheduled meeting on May 11, 2004, the board members discussed the recently conducted interview of candidates interested in the managing director’s position.

MVA chair David M. Sablan said that, when the board interviewed Benavente, she presented specific and realistic goals that she would like to see accomplished if she were selected.

“These goals are precisely in line with the mandate and objectives of the MVA. Vicky is no stranger to the challenges facing the CNMI. She has proven to be a capable administrator despite the many hurdles that the MVA has had to overcome. The board has confidence in her abilities to head the agency,” Sablan said.

Marian Aldan-Pierce, who currently serves as vice chair of the MVA board of directors, congratulated Benavente on her selection and expressed appreciation for her six years of service as the deputy managing director of the national tourism office.

“The MVA has experienced some difficult times, both within the CNMI and externally, with recent global events, such as SARS, the Iraq war, and our islands’ lean economic resources. Through all of this, Vicky has managed to motivate the team, and continually encourages the community and our tourism industry partners to support the MVA’s marketing efforts,” said Aldan-Pierce.
