3 schools catch last drop of grants
The Public School System has distributed the last and final round of awards on two federal financial grants that will cease to be offered to education agencies nationwide starting next year.
Three Saipan public schools—Koblerville Elementary School, San Vicente Elementary School and Oleai Elementary School—have been chosen as recipients of the last batch of competitive financial assistance under the Goals 2000 and Christa McAuliffe grants totaling $78,000.
After screening through a list of applicants, selected proposals authored by administrators and teachers were approved for funding, according to PSS Federal Programs Officer William P. Matson.
KES, who had submitted two Goals 2000 School Technology proposals, has been approved a total of $14,200 funding to pursue its NEARStar for Reading Resource and NEARStar for Kindergarten.
SVES was also notified by PSS that her school will be receiving $14,200 for its Lower Elementary School Network #1 and Upper Elementary School Network efforts.
SVES teachers Joaquina Salas, Rosalinda Adams and Beth Nepaial were also selected to receive funding of $2,500 each under the Christa McAuliffe Fellowship, a program created to provide fellowships to classroom teachers.
OES is also recipient to a total of $37,100 in pursuit of its plan to work on Technology Professional Development and Reading Renaissance Software and Training.
In addition, OES teachers Perpetua Wabol and Kelly Phillips have also been granted $2,500 each as the selected Christa McAuliffe fellows.
The Christa McAuliffe Fellowship Program was created in 1987 to provide fellowships to classroom teachers in memory of Sharon Christa McAuliffe, the New Hampshire teacher who served as an astronaut on the space shuttle Challenger in January 1986.
The program is unique, annual state-based recognition program for experienced teachers which results in the development of a product useful to the improvement of teaching and learning.
The Federal Goals 2000, on the other hand, was established in order to assist schools in directly impacting on student achievement, performance, and success for lifelong learning.
