Jury selection began yesterday in the trial of David Tanaka Diaz, who is under suspicion of trafficking over 120 grams of crystal methamphetamine or ice last year.

Diaz was nabbed in August of 2001 allegedly in possession of the significant amount of illegal drugs, then considered the biggest single haul of ice in the CNMI that year.

The defendant is being represented by counsel Antonio Atalig. The criminal case is being prosecuted by Assistant Attorneys General Daniel Cohan and Janine Udui.

Superior Court Associate Judge Juan T. Lizama is presiding over the trial at courtroom 217A.

According to earlier reports, some 120 grams of ice was seized from Diaz in Garapan, resulting from information reported by a concerned citizen to authorities.

The defendant reportedly attempted to elude arrest but rammed into an unmarked police vehicle in the process.

Diaz’ jury trial is expected to last all throughout this week. (MM)
