House commends Korean Airlines
The CNMI House of Representatives commended the Korean Airlines for its exemplary contribution to the Northern Marianas by reinstating its direct flights between Seoul and Saipan, despite the economic threats of the September 11 attacks.
House Resolution 13-042 congratulates the KAL for resuming regular schedule flights to the Commonwealth and for its bravery, especially during hard economic times.
“Korean Airlines is to be commended for resuming its flights to the CNMI, especially during this difficult economic times in our region compounded by heightened security measures imposed following the attacks on the United States,” the resolution reads.
HR 13-042, authored by Rep. Francisco Dlg. Aldan, also noted that KAL has resumed its direct flights to the CNMI when the islands are yet to fully recover from the crisis that crippled the economies of many Asian countries and Pacific island-nations.
“Airlines are suffering as a result of a decrease in air travel following the recent attacks, many airlines have taken cost-saving measures, including reduction in flight services and laying-off employees, but KAL decided to resume its flights,” Aldan said.
The resolution recognized and expressed appreciation to KAL’s bravery in bracing the difficult times and helping the Commonwealth recover from its ailing tourism industry by brining in additional Korean tourists to the islands.
The Marianas Visitors Authority earlier reported an increase in visitor arrivals to the CNMI for the first three months of 2002.
The MVA recorded a consistent significant improvement as the Korean market continues to post a double-digit growth since the resumption of Korean Airlines’ daily flights in January this year.
Arrivals from Korea registered a 94 percent increase with 8,175 visitors in February 2002 compared with 4,213 visitors in February 2001.
