The American Red Cross yesterday announced that sailors from both the USS Gary and the USS Chancellorsville will be participating in the 15th Annual Walkathon scheduled on April 28.

According to a media statement from the Red Cross, at least 50 sailors will be walking in the event. In addition, the US Navy will oversee one of the five aide stations along the pathway.

“The USS Chancellorsville and the USS Gary’s visit to Saipan during the Walkathon is very fortuitous, as it allows us to highlight one of the most crucial operations of the American Red Cross: AFES (Armed Forces Emergency Services). One of our most fundamental missions is to keep the American people in touch with their loved ones in the Armed Forces during times of family crisis and celebration”, said Emergency Services Director, Cherry Schadeck.

AFES paid and volunteer staff deployment with US troops in operations and exercises worldwide; they also deliver many other services, including health and safety education, volunteer recruitment and placement, and disaster services on US military installations worldwide.

All services are consistent with the American Red Cross mission of helping people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.

Registration will open at 6am and will close at 8am on April 28. It will be a 10K walk that begins and ends at Kilili Beach Park. Everyone who raises a minimum of $15.00 will receive a free t-shirt. Families and friends are encouraged to participate and are promised with a carnival fun-filled morning.

For more information on the event, or those who are interested in making a donation to “Sponsor-a-Sailor,” may call the Chapter office at 234-3459.
