The 2001 Liberation Day Executive Committee, chaired by Edward H. Manglona, has begun planning for the biggest annual celebration in the Commonwealth with the formation of several subcommittees.

This year’s Liberation Day theme is “Rediscovering Liberation; Celebrating Freedom”.

The celebration will mark the 55th anniversary of the day American forces liberated local residents from Camp Susupe following the end of World War II hostilities.

According to Mr. Manglona, the Commonwealth is placing strong emphasis on the history of period when the islands were determined safe for habitation and the people were freed.

To assist in planning for the month-long event set to run June 1 through July 4, Mr. Manglona has appointed chairs to various sub-committees.

The Liberation Day festivities will include nightly entertainment including games, various rides, and food vendors. The concession subcommittee, chaired by Mark Aguon, will soon be issuing applications for concessions following approval of the rate structure. Details will be announced shortly.

The Solicitation/Fundraising Committee, chaired by Tony Cabrera, will be soliciting donations and contributions to be used for raffle prizes to raise funds to cover part of the cost of this event.

“The people expect good entertainment every night during the festivities and it will be difficult to bring such entertainment without the funds needed to cover entertainment fees,” Mr. Manglona said.

Local businesses and individuals are asked to help support this event by making generous donations of either monetary or other in-kind contributions.

For the queens subcommittee, Mr. Manglona has appointed Reina C. Camacho as chairperson. Any eligible young lady who is interested in vying for the prestigious title of Liberation Day Queen may contact Ms. Camacho at 234-5498 ext. 1703.

The entertainment subcommittee is headed by Moses Fejeran, who also chaired the subcommittee last year. Catherine Anderson chairs the Public Relations/Programs Subcommittee.
