Frederick A. Black, United Sates Attorney for the Districts of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, yesterday announced that the US Government filed a one-count complaint charging three Japanese nationals with conspiracy to import methamphetamine or “ice.”

Charged before the US court were Masakazu Imamura, Masanobu Miyamoto, and Takayuki Kaji due to alleged violation of violation of Title 21, United States Code, Sections 952, 960, and 963.

Their initial appearance is scheduled today at 9:30am at the US District Court.

Masakazu Imamura, Masanobu Miyamoto, and Takayuki Kaji are all Japanese nationals who arrived at the Saipan International Airport on April 24, 2001 on a flight from Kansai, Japan.

Masanobu Miyamoto and Takayuki Kaji were detained at the airport after Customs officials discovered approximately 39 grams of ice hidden on Masanobu Miyamoto’s person and packing materials in Takayuki Kaji’s bag.

Further investigation led to the arrest of Masakazu Imamura on April 25, 2001, pursuant to an Arrest Warrant signed by Judge Alex R. Munson.

Assistant United States Attorney John J. Rice is prosecuting the case. The investigation is being conducted jointly by the CNMI Customs Enforcement Team and the CNMI/DEA Task Force.

Members of the public are reminded that the complaint is only an accusation. The defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
