Top seeds prevail in UMDA junior tennis championship
An exciting season of UMDA junior championship once again came to a close this weekend with only a few surprises as top seeds continued to dominate the event.
In the boy’s 18 and under singles group, Hee Seung Kim routed Daniel Son in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. While in the consolation final, Zhi Liang edged Vincent Ashraf in a nail-biting 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 conquest.
In the mixed doubles match, Hee Seung Kim once again emerged as champion, as he and his partner, Kana Aikawa, defeated the tough tandem of Gerald Boyer and Daniel Son in a three-set finale, 6-7, 6-2, 7-5.
In the girl’s 18 and under singles, Aikawa was champion once again as she defeated Roselynn Isaac. In the doubles match, Aikawa collaborated with Aryana Mahmoudi to defeat Isaac and Lisa Zou, 8-1.
In the boy’s 14 and under singles, top seed Jun Mun Chung dismissed Nicolos Son in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. In the doubles match, the pair of Dominic Camacho and Taylor Dunlap triumphed against Colin and Tyler Sinclair, 6-3
In the girl’s 14 and under singles, Mayuko Arriola bested Lissa-Dette Kirschenheiter for the championship. In the doubles match, Kirschenheiter teamed up with Kelsey Wallace to upset the top seeded duo of Sophia Barlas and Kathy Johnnson, 8-5.
In the tremendously popular boy’s 10 and under singles, top seed Gaku Matsamura vanquished overachieving Russel Buenaventura. Before the final, Buenaventura defeated players seeded higher than him. In the consolation final, Tyler Sinclair topped Kai Staal, 6-2.
In the girl’s 10 and under singles, Katy Johnson bested Noelle Calvo in an exciting match. While, Audrey Motto won against Kristina Wallace, 6-3 in the consolation final.
Tournament Chair Kana Aikawa, who did an outstanding job making the tournament possible, congratulated the winners as well as the first-time participants of the UMDA junior tennis championship.
Next up in the Commonwealth’s tennis calendar, the 20th Annual DFS Micronesians Tennis Championship in May. (MR)
