After leading his varsity squad to the Saipan Private School Athletics Association basketball championship, Mt. Carmel’s Brian Torres was adjudged as the Most Valuable Player of the just concluded tournament.

Torres led Mt. Carmel to a 69-23 thrashing of Calvary Christian Academy in the championship game of the SPSAA varsity cage tournament.

Joining Torres in the 12-man varsity All-Conference team were his teammates Alingmar Ogumore and J.C. Kim. Representing second-place Calvary were Kevin Norman, Young Jin Choi and Brandon Demapan.

John Macaranas and Steve Zhou of Eucon International also made it to the elite list. While Jerome Cataua and Tyler Yu bannered Grace Christian Academy and John Aguon and Woon Yok were selected from the Northern Marianas Academy.

For the junior varsity boys, Kevin Rejano of Seventh Day Adventist wound up as the MVP. He was joined in the eight-player All-Conference Team by his teammate Eddie Reyes.

Representing Calvary were Tomas Demapan and Leo Valeros. While Donald Seidler and Yoo Min Oh were also picked from Grace Christian. Saipan Community School had Junior Kaneko and Jovano Taitano in the team.

Soly Camacho of Grace Christian ended up with the MVP trophy for the junior varsity girls tournament. She was joined in the All-Conference Team by her teammate Erralyn Reiman, Priscilla Norman and Dixie Inos of Calvary, Jennifer Jang and Laurdas Mack of Community and Isa Arriola and Nei Satur of Seventh Day.

Although the season has ended it does not mean the games of the SPSAA basketball tournament have all been played. On the afternoon of April 17, players, coaches and attendees alike will experience a one-of-a-kind basketball match as the All-Conference Teams will pit their hardcourt skills against their mentors.

“We decided that this was the best way to end the season,” Scott Norman, coach of Calvary said. “Nothing usually happens when you pick an all-conference or all-star team. This year we thought it would be fun and beneficial to let these boys and girls see how well they do against a team made up of coaches. Whatever happens, we look forward to the positive competition that has been evident all year.”
