Courting Liability

The Issue: CUC’s disconnection of Tinian airport and harbor facilities without reviewing accounts.

Our View: It is wrong to endanger the lives of the traveling public given that it is not their fault.

In its quest to sending a serious message to delinquent government offices, the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation (CUC) disconnected power services at the harbor and airport on Tinian.

Fortunately, the two venues had back-up generators to power a vital facility of commerce and travel to our southern neighbor. But what if the generators failed to work endangering the lives of travelers? Would CUC absorb the liability?

The greater question is: What if CPA is delinquent in its utility bills, would CUC disconnect the Saipan International Airport and Tanapag Harbor? It certainly is a loaded question given the vital role such facilities play in the economic livelihood of these isles. The situation is the same insofar as Tinian is concerned.

DPS Commissioner Charles Ingram Jr. deserves the accolade of this community for the successful arrest of an illegal recruiter in Manila who dished out bogus dollar bills to fellow countrymen she sent here recently.

Imagine the embarrassment these people had to endure for being arrested for fake money only to be dealt a double blow when they found out that the jobs they were promised do not exist.

It’s good too that there’s an ongoing collaboration with the Philippine Center for Transnational Crime Interpol. The successful arrest of the illegal recruiter ought to send a deafening message to others that there’s hardly anymore room for fraudulent hiring, including the issuance of fake US dollar bills. Let this be a lesson for one and all.

Meanwhile, let’s hope the court frees the victims in this case. They were out looking for jobs to support their families. How unfortunate that they were duped into a corner they never even dreamed of. We pray for their freedom. Si Yuus Maase`!
