Where’s our betel nut trees?
The time has apparently arrived for Saipan residents to take extra measures in safeguarding their properties, including betel nut trees, against underhanded individuals.
This time of tight economic conditions, not even betel nut trees are spared by thieves.
A couple resident in the Fina Sisu area may start putting this into consideration after waking up Thursday last week and discovered some of their betel nut trees uprooted and mysteriously gone.
The mysterious disappearance of several betel nut trees within their home-grown plantation near the Hollywood Video struck the couple flabbergasted, Department of Public Safety spokesperson Cecil Celes said.
The victims discovered their betel nut trees missing at around 9am Thursday and immediately sought police assistance.
According to police reports, a witness had come forward and was ready to attest as to who illegally uprooted several of the trees.
But police warned no sufficient evidence has been gathered to positively identify the real suspect.
Victims further stated that sometime in early February, their betel nut plantation also fell prey to an illegal act where suspects reportedly incinerated some of their plants.
Suspects to the theft case are still at large. (MM)
