Council honors NMC’s efforts to uplift quality of education
The Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council yesterday paid recognition to the Northern Marianas College community for its hand in obtaining for CNMI’s lone postsecondary institution a six-year reaffirmed accreditation status from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
The college recently gained a new and vital edge against its educational counterparts in the Pacific with a renewed maximum accreditation term that WASC based from a thorough review and deliberation of the institution’s Self Study and results of the three-day accreditation visit last October 2000.
Council members attributed NMC’s enormous accomplishment to members of the Board of Regents led by Chair Ramon G. Villagomez, Interim Chairman Fermin M. Atalig and NMC president Jack Sablan.
College officials honored for their contributions in the reaffirmation process also included Self Study Chair P. Vincent Riley, co-chair Chas Algaier, junior accreditation liaison Dr. Barbra Moir, and the faculty, students, and staff of NMC.
NMC has always managed to obtain the maximum level of accreditation since 1985, when it initiated efforts to tap expert assistance to objectively assess the institution’s programs and services.
With a fresh six-year reaffirmation, the college is expected to tread the years 2001 to 2007 with a duly-earned capacity to apply for an unlimited number of federal grants and offer to its students college credits that are transferable to other institutions.
In addition, NMC students will also have fair chances of securing federal financial aids to support their education.
“Another vital point is that the college has met the standards imposed upon all colleges that are associated with our size and the kinds of programs that we offer. We’ve met the standards set for these institutions,” said president Sablan, who earlier expressed hopes students will now have more confidence in the quality of NMC’s educational services. (MM)
