Mandarin Air swears to maintain Saipan flights

Despite revenue losses for the past months and the continued increased of fuel prices, officials of Mandarin Airlines assured CNMI officials that flights to Northern Marianas will continue unabated.

The CNMI delegation headed by Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio disclosed fruitful results of its three-day official visit to Taiwan as part of its trade and investment promotion mission of the government.

Mr. Tenorio said discussions with officials of Mandarin Airlines and its parent company, China Air, assured the government of the continued air service to the Northern Marianas provided that assistance will be extended by the CNMI government and the private sector.

The chief executive was pleased with Mandarin Air’s commitment to continue its service to the CNMI despite financial setbacks brought about by the slow Taiwan economy and the lack of promotional activities on part of the government to establish Saipan as a tourist destination.

In hopes to continue flying to CNMI, Mandarin Air deployed over 150 travel agents in Taiwan and other Asian countries to promote tour packages for the Northern Marianas.

In the Taipei meeting, the CNMI delegation also discussed potential investments with Taiwan businessmen and presented packages on new investment incentives, including the newly created Free Trade Zone, and tax breaks.

In a statement, Mr. Tenorio said the visit include series of presentations explaining the advantage of CNMI as investment venue including its ideal location, low tax rates and duty free export status to the mainland US.

In addition to this, the CNMI team also held special meetings with travel agencies in Taipei to discuss increased tourism to Tinian and discussions on FTZ initial formation and the foundation of a possible “Sister Island” relationship between the two governments.

The delegation include members of the Strategic Economic Development Council, members of the 12th Commonwealth Legislature, representatives of the Mayor of Tinian, the Tinian Municipal Council, and the Tinian Gaming Commission. (EGA)
