Ex-senator joins mayoralty race
Former senator and immigration chief Jose P. Mafnas yesterday disclosed plans to join the Saipan mayoralty race in the November general election.
Mr. Mafnas, who also served as chief of police and as chairman of the Committee for Governmental Institution on the First Constitutional Convention, is said to be entertaining offers from different political parties.
He disclosed his plans to run for the mayoral office in hopes to help Saipan boost its local economy by promoting programs that will prove beneficial to the residents.
Mr. Mafnas held various positions in the government. He was a longtime teacher and school principal before he became the district prosecutor.
In addition, the former immigration chief also served as a member of the District Legislature and became the vice-president of the Senate for four unprecedented terms.
He is the younger brother of the late Vice-speaker Jesus Pangelinan Mafnas who is also one of the noted political figure in the Commonwealth.
Mr. Mafnas hopes to announce his mayoral bid next week, once all negotiations are concluded. He will be pitting against Jesus Guerrero of Reform Party and Juan Tudela of Democrat Party.
