DPS, DCCA rout opponents in opener
Monday night at the Garapan basketball court was the site for the opening of first ever Government basketball league with a large crowd witnessing a preview of two perennial powerhouses rout their opponents.
In the first game of the evening, the Department of Public Safety, jumped out an 11-0 lead and was never threatened as the Officers demolished the Department of Land Registration & Survey 90-64.
Loaded with veteran all-stars, DPS led 43-25 at the half. DPS’ superior passing and rebounding led to many easy baskets as 12 of their 15 players all got on the scoreboard. Frankie Pangelinan led the winners, pumping in 22 points, 3 steals and 2 assists.
Abong Camacho also contributed 16 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists, while Elias Saralu shipped in 16 points. For DLRS, Steve Rasa led all players with 27 points, 12 rebounds and 2 assists. Oscar Masga and coach-player, Jack Diaz both chipped 10 points.
In the nightcap. the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs ravished the Commonwealth Ports Authority, 79-60. The combination of Speedy John “Liling, Oh What A Feeling” Reyes and Ed “The Unidentified Flying Object” Diaz combined for 55 of the team’s 79 total points including 15 combined steals.
Ed Diaz led all scorer’s with 32 points, 13 rebounds, 9 steals, 3 assists and 2 blocked shots while Reyes finished with 23 points, 6 steals and towering Marvin Williams chipping in 8 points, 15 rebounds and 5 steals. Juan Aquino lso chipped in with 12 points, connecting on all field goals from the 3-point area.
NMC 65, DPS-Fire “Heat” 58
Team NMC put out the “Heat,” the Fire Department “Heat” that is, as DPS-Fire went cold in the final quarter, mustering only 13 points and falling victim to the NMC prehistorics 65-58 in Tuesday’s game.
NMC used balanced scoring and timely shooting to offset the flames shoot-out by the younger Fire team. DPS-Fire held a 34-30 edge at intermission before NMC started a 7-0 run to begin the 2nd half and take a lead they never relinquished.
Roman “The Man” Borja protested that NMC had the advantage because of their new state of the art gym, while their players had to use their driveways and basket trucks for shoot around.
For the winners, Savvy veterans Ray Basa and Rufino Aguon paced the way. Basa finished with 12 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, while Aguon had 8 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists.
For DPS-Fire, Jack Tudela’s all around performance reaped him 22 points, 12 rebounds and 4 steals, while Steve Limes and Clinton Ngiraked chipped in with 12 and 8 points, respectively.
CHC 73, DPW 58
In the second game, CHC’s triple towers of Joe Tudela, Mathew Carter, and Lawrence Devega proved the difference as CHC amassed 52 rebounds to DPW’s 38 enroute to a 73-58 victory over the Department of Public Works DPW.
For the visitors, Joe Tudela finished with 17 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks. Teammate Mathew Carter finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Tom Diaz chipped in with the 10 points, 6 rebounds and 6 steals.
For DPW, John Guerrero paced the way with 20 points, 12 rebounds, while Dave Camacho dumped in 9 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals.
