Officials of the Department of Land and Natural Resources are currently reviewing the proposal submitted by the Legislature on the possible transfer to the agency of the responsibility to maintain all public parks and tourist sites.

Under pending proposals, the Division of Parks and Grounds of the DLNR and the Marianas Visitors Authority are both tasked to perform grounds maintenance at various public sites.

By letting a single agency to handle the maintenance work, House Rep. Antonio M. Camacho said the potential overlapping and duplication of efforts will be totally eliminated.

Mr. Camacho explained that Parks and Grounds division can be viewed as the more appropriate office to handle maintenance of these tourists sites, which will give the MVA sufficient time to concentrate its efforts in bringing in more tourists to the Commonwealth.

Due to the possible transfer of the responsibility to the department, DLNR officials are now carefully evaluating the proposal amid reports that department officials will support the Legislature’s move.

But alternatives are not being ruled out, according to a source at the DLNR. In fact, officials are preparing its recommendations to the Legislature once the chamber convenes on Friday for a public hearing.

The source said that should there will be problems on the possible transfer of the grounds and maintenance operations, the DLNR would be willing to toss the responsibility to any agency deemed qualified to handle the job.
