The Public School System joined hands with various agencies and members of the community Friday to educate parents on the importance of health and wellness to their children’s education.

Sponsored by the Head Start Program, the First Annual Parent Symposium tackled thoroughly various problems of parenting, deadly diseases and alternative measures that parents can take to help their children grow up healthy and sound.

According to Head Start Program director Dino R. Taitano, the symposium was aimed at educating every parent on the island and to make them aware of the many different areas involved in promoting a healthy environment for their children, especially pre-schoolers.

With a theme “Show you care, Stay Healthy, Live Healthy”, the symposium also provided parents a well-rounded discussion and activities that promote healthy living and staying healthy especially within the realms of pre-school age of three to five.

In addition to this, the program director stressed that children of that age start to attend school and are ready to learn and socialize with other students, and their health and soundness will significantly affect their growing up years.

Taitano said, more than 200 parents, community members and representatives from various agencies participated in the whole day symposium including the break-out sessions where issues on pre-natal care, immunization, HIV/AIDS awareness and dental care were carefully discussed.

Aside from this, representatives from different agencies participated also by providing parents and participants brochures and other materials necessary for growing up years.

“We hope to make this an annual event, next year we’re looking forward to agencies that will be displaying their wares and depending on the issues, we will be inviting facilitators and experts from different fields,” said Taitano.

The program director said that with the PSS’ theme of “Healthy Children, Ready to Learn,” the Head Start years will definitely play a dramatic role in molding the students’ future and parents should be aware and properly educated on the importance of their children’s health.
