In efforts to help the Commonwealth to bounce off from financial distress, Tinian Senator David M. Cing said the tourism industry can only be revived through strong support from the public sector.

Mr. Cing said the recent rape incident on Tinian has alarmed travelers which could severely affect the tourism industry, considering the fact that it is still in the early stages of recovery from a major slump.

He stressed that tourism is the Commonwealth’s largest source of revenue and that visitors should feel safe and welcome, adding that reports of crime can do immeasurable damage to the industry.

“The people of Tinian are greatly disturbed by the recent reports. They want others to know that crime, particularly violent crime, is not tolerated in their community and they will do what ever they can to help the Department of Safety in their efforts to solve this crime and to prevent any future incidents”, the Tinian senator said.

Mr. Cing also urged individuals who might have some information which can help solve or prevent crime in the CNMI to come forward and advise the police.

“The police rely on the public to be their ears and eyes in the community. It is important that we look out for each other, keep an eye out for trouble and that we alert the authorities if we suspect there might be a situation that needs attention”, said Cing.

He said the public can do a great service to the Commonwealth especially to the tourism industry if every individual will take time to give directions, answer questions, overcome language barriers and offer help to visitors who appear to be in need of assistance.
