How safe is the Northern Marianas?
The Department of Public Safety received a total of 11,008 complaints. Of these, 4,297 were official cases handled by the Criminal Investigation Section last year.
Some 1,094 cases were sent to the Attorney General’s Office for their disposition. Capt. Delbert Sablan said 150 cases were considered closed either due to lack of evidence or the complainants no longer interested to pursue the case.
The remaining 3,053 cases are still under investigation.
An average of 400 cases a month are received by the Criminal Investigation Division. About 50 to 70 of the cases are no longer pursued because the victims no longer want to cooperate.
In the year 2000, there were three homicide cases, only one remains under investigation. The two homicide cases were considered solved. From 1984 to the present, there are 19 unsolved homicide cases on the island.
