Drive vs. abortion gaining grounds
Noting the need to call attention to the sanctity of life and family values on the islands, the House of Representatives has joined various church groups to mark January as “Celebration of Life” month.
Legislators backed activities initiated by the religious sector to oppose moves advocating abortion and to promote pro-life values among island residents.
In a resolution adopted last week, they maintained it is in the best interest of all people in the CNMI to work together to “promote abstinence, responsible behaviors and the delayed onset of sexual activity in an effort to prevent pregnancy among adolescents.”
They also recognized the “value and sanctity of life and its need to be protected and preserved,” according to HR 12-110 offered by Health and Welfare Committee chair Rep. Malua T. Peter.
The resolution came amid attempts by some quarters to press for the lifting of the ban against abortion in the Commonwealth. The Constitution disallows the practice, but the Legislature has the authority to amend that provision.
Roman Catholic Bishop Tomas A. Camacho and Rev. Ray Kinsella have hailed the House’s support on their activities, saying this is an indication that the islands have kept their family values intact.
A church coalition under the “Christians for Life” have joined hands to commemorate the event with various activities that will include a prayer rally and marches which are scheduled this weekend at the American Memorial Park.
The island government is being confronted with the controversial issue on abortion since some quarters in the community have pressured officials to comply with the Roe vs. Wade ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court allowing abortion on the first trimester of pregnancy.
Abortion has become a thorny issue in the pre-dominantly Catholic island community. Church leaders have launched the campaign in a bid to counter renewed debate on the controversy. (BS)
