Sweeney takes 1st trip to CNMI
Republican congressman John E. Sweeney of New York will keynote the annual gala installation of the 2001 Board of Directors of the Saipan Chamber of Commerce, CNMI’s largest business organization, on Saturday at the Hyatt Regency.
This will be Mr. Sweeney’s first trip to the CNMI, according to the Chamber. While on Saipan, he will have an opportunity to brief with local business and CNMI leaders, as well as enjoy some of the island’s visitor attractions.
The theme for this year’s gala installation dinner is “A Celebration of Business in the Marianas.”
“After the success of last year’s installation dinner where we had a U.S. Congressman as our guest, the Chamber’s board of directors voted to invite another American politician this year,” said outgoing Chamber President Lynn A. Knight.
“This is also an opportunity for our organization to contribute to the CNMI1s efforts to brief Washington officials about our islands and hear an outside perspective on our issues,” Ms. Knight said in a media statement.
Mr. Sweeney was sworn-in as a member of the 106th Congress on January 6, 1999. In his first term as a representative, he quickly distinguished himself among his colleagues. He was appointed to the Republican Steering Committee, which names Members of Congress to posts on the House of Representatives’ 21 committees.
Mr. Sweeney serves on the banking committee, the small business committee, and the transportation committee. He is Vice-chairman of the aviation subcommittee and is a member of the ground transportation subcommittee, the capital markets subcommittee and the housing subcommittee.
Before becoming an elected representative, Mr. Sweeney served for more than two years as New York State Commissioner of Labor where he gave the Labor Department a more pro-active role throughout the state and the nation.
His efforts focused on reducing burdensome government regulations on businesses and stimulating economic growth while protecting the well-being of the state’s workforce.
