With the reduction in monthly losses, the Marianas Visitors Authority Board has approved $13,000 funding for the continuation of Garapan Street Market next year.

Losses in the weekly Street Market project has been reduced from $1,500 to $1,300. So far, MVA has already spent $12,400 from fiscal year October 2000 to December 2000 for entertainment and advertising. MVA earns a measly $800 a week from rentals of the concessionaires and advertisement.

MVA Board Chair Dave M. Sablan has reminded the staff to encourage students from different schools to perform every week to entice the young people and their parents to visit the street market.

In an effort to resolve the funding source of the project, MVA Board Director J.M. Guerrero recommended that the tourism agency initiate discussion with the Commonwealth Development Authority.

With the planned Garapan Revitalization project scheduled to begin next year, Mr. Sablan said the tourism agency should now find a permanent place for the street market.

One of the sites being eyed for the street market is the vacant space beside the CNMI Museum which would be able to accommodate native huts.

The Garapan Revitalization Project is envisioned to improve the island’s tourist district and the American Memorial Park.

“We will continue to street market but we do have to consider making a lot of changes based on the comments we have received since we established the project,” Mr. Sablan said.

Some of the residents have complained about the garbage left behind in the evening by the concessionaires and the tourists. Parking too has become a problem as cars blocked the driveway of residents. (LFR)
