The Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council is urging the Department of Public Safety to regularly deploy police officers around the island to help deter criminal and other illegal activities.

The call came in the wake of a series of burglary in several villages by unscrupulous individuals who have burglarized classrooms, poker rooms and video shops.

In an adopted resolution, the Council said that conducting periodic police roving patrol service to villages will reduce criminal activities and enhance peace and security throughout the island.

The Council added that increased police visibility is needed especially in areas where crime rates are high. It believes that the move would help reduce illegal activities which pose danger to the safety of both local residents and tourists.

Council officials are asking Public Safety Commissioner Charles Ingram to instruct his patrol officers to hold periodic police roving service to various villages on the island.

The resolution cited a provision in the CNMI Constitution which guarantees that Commonwealth residents are entitled to an effective public protection.
