CNMI Museum of History and Culture Board Chair Herman T. Guerrero received honors from the Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council for obtaining the prestigious United States Year 2000 National Humanities award.

Mr. Guerrero is the only local awardee chosen from within U.S. territories in the entire Pacific region, hand-picked from a lineup of National Humanities Medal nominees in America by President Clinton himself.

Last Dec. 15, the president and first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton officially announced Mr. Guerrero’s selection as recipient of the 2000 national humanities award.

The local awardee was chosen based on his numerous contributions to the humanities that has served to deepen the nation’s understanding of the humanities, broaden the citizens’ engagement with the humanities and has helped preserve and expand American access to important resources in the humanities.

Mr. Guerrero, a former legislator, has encouraged delivery of a number of projects to include institutes for teachers, a photographic and oral documentary history of the indigenous community, translation of the 16th century Jesuit texts, publication of history books relating how the Northern Marianas became part of the United States, and a documentary film showing the impact of modern day changes on the roots of indigenous island culture and traditions.

The municipal council has also named Mr. Guerrero as a distinguished individual who has made extraordinary contributions to American cultural life and thought.
