With the Christmas holidays fast approaching, police have seen an increasing incident of poaching on Saipan for the past three months, according to Capt. Delbert Sablan.

Theft of livestock such as chicken, pigs and goats have also been on the rise since September, he said.

Poachers tried to slaughter a cow in a farm owned by the Guerrero family in Dandan area Monday morning. After sensing that there were other people in the vicinity, the unidentified men ran way leaving the wounded cow behind.

“We would like to warn everyone that they face imprisonment if they are caught accepting stolen meat,” said Capt. Sablan. He said many people claim that the meat they give as gifts were bought from Tinian.

Police on island have been on alert since September after reports showed that at least three to four cows a month have been stolen or slaughtered by poachers. In many instances, the poachers leave behind cut up parts of the cows.

Capt. Sablan cautioned the people against stealing livestock because these have been given shots of antibiotics or vitamins which may cause health problems to consumers of meat.

The Department of Public Safety has asked the assistance of the community in providing information about these people who sell fresh meat from stolen cows or other livestock. (LFR)
