Rep. William S. Torres yesterday pressed the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. to begin construction of water projects for several villages on central Saipan as funds have already been made available by lawmakers since last year.

The projects include water reservoirs in China Town and Chalan Laulau that will provide potable water to the residents of the two villages as well as Navy Hill, Garapan and San Jose.

“These reservoirs will definitely enhance the water quality and reliability of potable water” for these areas, the Precinct 3 representative wrote in a letter to CUC Executive Director Timothy P. Villagomez.

But Mr. Torres commended the government-owned utility corporation for ongoing water drilling project at Mt. Tapochao that could help ease perennial shortages on the island, especially the central areas.

Mr. Villagomez last week reported to CUC board about the pump tests which he said may lead to “light at the end of the tunnel” regarding the water problem.

“We should be able to commence tests on the other well on Mt. Tapochao by the end of this month,” the CUC chief explained. “These wells could be a major step in easing the minimal water hours for central Saipan.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Torres asked CUC for an update on the proposed exploratory drilling in the upper Chalan Kiya property of Rep. Stanley T. Torres to provide fresh groundwater source for residents.

“It is my understanding that the salinity level of the water in Chalan Kiya may soon reach a point that warrants a new water source. [My] office would appreciate an update on the agency’s timeline to upgrade the water quality and delivery for the residents… as well,” he said.

The lawmaker also followed through the sewer system in Gualo Rai, although it has already been connected to the Middle Road system.

Mr. Torres said residents in upper Gualo Rai and around the loop have no access to any sewer connection, which CUC needs to undertake with Mr. Villagomez’ approval. (BS),/i
