Last Nov. 3 Subway Restaurant joined the celebration to commemorate the birth of the sandwich inventor John Montague, fourth Earl of Sandwich.

Born in London in 1718, he was England’s first lord of the admiralty, secretary of state for the northern department, postmaster general and the man after whom Captain Cook named the Sandwich Islands. A rogue and gambler, it is said that he invented the sandwich as a time-saving device while engaging in a 24-hour-long card game.

The result was the birth of the sandwich, the world’s most versatile and portable food. No doubt the Earl would have felt quite at home at Subway, with its irresistible variety of submarine sandwiches made with a savory selection of fresh baked breads.

Over the years, Subway has developed a reputation for serving high-quality food that is a healthful alternative to greasy fast food. However, consumers do not always equate healthy food with good taste. To that end, Subway has put a different spin on some tried and true sandwiches by adding a little zip courtesy of new gourmet sauces and breads.

“When combined, an entirely new taste sensation is created,” says Chris Martone, Subway research and development’s executive chief.

Consumers will have to be their taste buds ready for the Honey Mustard Melt (turkey breast, ham, bacon and melted cheese topped with a honey mustard sauce), Horseradish Roast Beef (tender roast beef with a creamy, tangy horseradish sauce), Asiago Caesar Chicken (made with real Asiago cheese), and Southwestern Steak and Cheese (inspired by the savory flavors of the American Southwest).

Subway Restaurants (www.subway.com) was founded in 1965 by Fred DeLuca with a $1,000 loan from family, friend and co-founder Dr. Pete Buck. Since then, Subway has grown to more than 14,600 restaurants in 75 different countries (as of Oct. 2000), including 11 locations in Guam and three on Saipan.
