Japanese folk tales and Dickens’ Christmas Carol

As part of the continuing program sponsored by the Friends of the Arts (FOA) and the Japanese Society, in conjunction with the ongoing exhibit of the Japanese civilian period in the Marianas at the Commonwealth Museum, the November Salon will feature reading of a collection of Japanese folk tales for children in both Japanese and English.
Starting at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 12, representatives of the Japanese Society Sachiko Adachi and Tadashi Gonda will read the stories in Japanese and FOA members Sam McPhetres and Melody Actouka will read the English translation. The stories are well suited for children of all ages. Many of the stories will be illustrated by story boards and picture books. Everyone is welcome, especially children who like a good fairy tale and others interested in cross cultural experiences.
This program is the second in the series organized by the Japanese Society of Saipan. In October the salon theme was wearing the yutaka, the summer kimono. Several people showed up for the modeling and try-ons and a good time was had by all.
The FOA will be sponsoring the production of a radio version of the ever popular Christmas tale of Scrooge, Tiny Tim and the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. A large cast is required and people of all ages are invited to the audition and first rehearsal at the Marianas High School little theater in building 101H on Nov. 18 at 2:00 p.m.
No acting experience is required and no memorizing of lines, so people who might otherwise be reluctant to participate in other theatrical events should feel quite comfortable and have a good time taking on these timeless roles for the radio production. The program will be broadcast during the Christmas season on KRNM.
