In an effort to protect wildlife on Aguigan, legislation was passed yesterday that will require those who want to land on the small island to seek permission first from the Division of Fish and Wildlife both prior to departure and immediately upon return.

This will add another layer of redtape before anyone can land on Aguigan, which is near Tinian, as under current law, written permission is required to be secured from the mayor.

If it becomes law, DFW will inspect all aircraft or personal landings there, not only to protect the wildlife but to provide information as well regarding wildlife data collection, according to the House Committee on Natural Resources.

“[S]uch inspection will also provide the Tinian Mayor with useful information that pertains to wildlife population, distribution and other related data on Aguigan,” the committee said in its report.

HB 12-255, authored by Tinian Rep. Norman S. Palacios, was passed unanimously during the House session. It now heads to the Senate for action.
