Aurora Australis, The German Period in the Mariana Islands, 1899-1914 by Dr. Dirk H.R. Spennemann of Charles Sturt University in Australia has just been published by the CNMI Office of Historic Preservation.

The 247-page book is divided into chapters reflecting the social, economic and political affairs of one of Germany’s last Pacific colonies. It has photographs which have rarely been published and is full of statistical and documentary data which illustrate life in the Northern Marianas at that time.

To commemorate this newest addition to the library on Northern Marianas History, a book signing event will be held at the CNMI Museum of Culture and History on Tuesday evening, Oct. 10 at 6 pm. The books will be on sale for $15 and Dr. Spennemann will be on hand to give a brief explanation of his book and autograph copies.

The event, sponsored by the Historic Preservation Office and the Museum with the collaboration of the CNMI Council for the Humanities, is open to the public and refreshments will be served. There is no admission charge.
