U.S. labor officials yesterday began disbursing partial payment of back wages owed to some 300 factory workers of Eurotex amounting to $600,000.

The settlement was made possible after some of the buyers and retailers of the company sent money to ensure the continued shipment of goods, according to an official of the U.S. Department of Labor and Immigration who declined to be identified.

Workers who have returned to China would still be able to receive their back wages since arrangements have been made for the money transfer.

The labor official said negotiations are still ongoing and they are hoping that the whole payment, estimated to reach $900,000, will be made as soon as possible.

Chinese workers of Eurotex have staged two protest marches in recent weeks to air their grievances against their employer and to plead their case to both the CNMI and federal authorities. They demanded payment of wages that have not been given to them for the last three months.

The Saipan Garment Manufacturers Association has suspended Eurotex following reports of non-payment of wages.
