Saipan, Tinian under Typhoon Condition II
The Emergency Management Office has advised Saipan and Tinian residents to step up typhoon preparedness after the National Weather Services Guam issued an advisory that typhoon Saomai was slowly heading to the islands as of late last night.
Saipan and Tinian have been placed under typhoon condition II due to anticipated storm threats, according to an EMO bulletin. EMO has maintained typhoon condition III for the island of Agrihan since early morning yesterday.
The weather advisory said damaging winds are possible over Saipan and Tinian as well as Agrihan.
EMO monitoring teams stayed up all night to keep a close watch on any developments, noting the current episode of gusty winds is CNMI’s first in three years since typhoon Keith.
EMO Director Gregorio A. Deleon Guerrero has urged local residents to secure their homes and be on alert for flying debris.
As of 4:00 p.m. yesterday, typhoon Saomai was located at 16.1 degrees north and 146.9 degrees east, or 95 statute miles northeast of Saipan and 209 statute miles southeast of Agrihan with maximum sustained winds of 105 MPH, with higher gusts and moving west direction at 12 MPH.
