Local athletes bag medals in Sydney track meet • Hammer thrower Clara Planas wins first gold ever for CNMI from athletics competition

Coach Elias Rangamar, who accompanied the NMI’s athletics team that participated in the Oceania Track and Field Championships in Adelaide, Ausatralia last week, yesterday said that NMI athletes will bring home one gold, one silver and one bronze medal, the first NMI medals in Oceania athletics competition.

On Aug. 24, Clara Planas brought the NMI first ever athletics gold medal in the Hammer Throw with a toss of 21.44 meters. On the same day, Shane Ogumoro made the finals and placed 6th in the 400m with a personal best time of 57.53. His previous best was 62.97.

Also competing on this day were Rommel Espera in the 100m with his best time of 12.52 for 27th place. Kimberly Menez with her personal best Long Jump of 4.09m, placing 10th, and Ketson Kabiriel in the 800m in a time of 2:11.98.

On August 25th, in the same Oceania championships and competing in the open events, Gabriel White was disqualified for crossing lanes in his 400m event. Kimberly Menez also ran her best 200m in a time of 30.09.

The top placings for the NMI and medal winners were Ketson (Jack) Kabiriel for a silver medal and a time of 12:15.35, and Johanson Mobel, a bronze medal in the time of 13.25.36, in the 3,000m Steeple Chase.

The team is due to arrive on Saipan today.
