The Northern Marianas College Board of Regents has moved to revise its proposed Fiscal Year 2001 budget request to $9.2 million to include projected expenses for additional personnel and repair of existing school facilities.

This, as the college continues to lobby for more general appropriation funds in light of a Legislature appeal to reduce the current tuition rate.

Under the present setup, the school’s share in the local appropriation only covers the college’s personnel expenditure. The college sources funds for other expenditures from its tuition collection.

To cover anticipated losses due to the proposed tuition reduction, BOR is appealing for an increase in the yearly appropriation.

The Legislature reportedly disclosed openness to the college’s requests in an effort to lower the current tuition of students.

Tuition for resident students is at $65 per credit for courses numbered 299 and below, and $80 per credit for courses numbered 300 and above.

For nonresident students, the rate is at $130 per credit for courses numbered 299 and below, and $160 per credit for courses numbered 300 and above.

Earlier this year, the board had come up with an $8.3 million FY 2001 budget, as they batted for an additional $364,000 to address its anticipated retirement obligations in the year ahead.

Originally the college has asked the Legislature for some $6.8 million for its general operations and some $1.7 million to fund its vocational education programs.

The board’s prevailing budget request represents a $1.1 million increase from NMC’s $8 million under the continuing resolution, according to NMC Director of Finance and Administration Alvaro Santos.

The additional funds are projected to address its personnel needs and the restoration of college facilities on Saipan and its satellite centers on Rota and Tinian.

“The budget package approved is seen to accommodate everything we need to implement discussions we’ve had on the salary pay scale and the adjunct faculty requests we have put in, as well as others,” NMC President Jack Sablan told BOR members yesterday. (MM)
