Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio yesterday asked all government agencies, private businesses, civic organizations and the people of the CNMI to support the efforts of the Marianas Visitors Authority to revive the ailing tourism industry.

While commending members of the private sector for their support in enticing tourists to visit the islands of Saipan, Tinian and Rota, the governor also noted the efforts by all the mayors to assist MVA’s programs and events.

The partnership of the government and the private sector complements the promotional efforts of the CNMI in the international market, Mr. Tenorio said in a speech during the MVA general membership meeting.

More than 100 delegates attended the meeting which saw the election of four representatives of the private sector in the MVA board.

The elected board directors are Roberta Guerrero (Mita Travel), Wendy Herring (Pacific Islands Club), JM Guerrero (JM & Associates) and Kiyoshi Aikawa (Creative Tours Micronesia).

Ms. Guerrero said the CNMI should move fast amid the competition facing the islands in the international travel industry. She also noted the need to have a strong environmental program to protect the CNMI’s resources.

MVA Board Chair David M. Sablan asked the private sector’s help in identifying areas which they believe the tourism agency should focus on in its promotional campaign.

With the limited budget given by the Legislature to MVA, Mr. Sablan said the tourism agency has done its best in stretching its financial resources in terms of marketing the Northern Marianas overseas.

“We are already trying to create magic here in what we are doing,” he said. (LFR)
