No autopsy for dead tourist

The Attorney General’s Office has turned down a request by the police to hire a pathologist to perform an autopsy on Korean national Bak Il Yoo, 39, who was found dead near the cafeteria of the Northern Marianas College.

Police found Mr. Bak at around 7:00 a.m. on June 20, 2000 in a sitting position with a cable wire around his neck. The wire was apparently tied to a roof frame.

Chief Criminal Prosecutor Kevin Lynch said there was no need for an autopsy since there was no indication of foul play or that any violent act was committed on the victim.

“It clearly appeared that it was a suicide,” he said.

Mr. Bak, who came here as a tourist on June 15, was supposed to have left Saipan June 21 back to Japan where he works. He was staying at Riviera Hotel located in Finasisu, several meters away from where he was found dead.

Convicted murderer in rape raps

Assistant Attorney General Clyde Lemons has filed four counts of criminal complaint against convicted murderer Pedro Pangelinan Cabrera.

Mr. Cabrera is now facing two counts of kidnapping, one count of rape and one count of assault with a dangerous weapon.

Police captured Mr. Cabrera, 47, after they swooped down on his hideout in Dandan beach area. He was the subject of a manhunt for allegedly raping a minor on June 1 and 2, 2000 while on parole.

Mr. Cabrera was sentenced to 35 years imprisonment for the second degree murder of Police Officer Joaquin Mettao at San Jose Beach in 1984. He has already served 15 years of his sentence when the Board of Parole granted his application for parole and released him on June 28, 1999 after denying his first request in 1997.

Warrant issued for ‘missing’ guest worker

Police has issued a warrant for the immediate arrest of Rose Marie Maliwat Atalino, 30, an employee at Hard Rock Cafe who has been missing since June 11, 2000.

Ms. Atalino is now a suspect in a theft case lodged against her by a co-worker.
Investigators strong believe that Ms. Atalino has left Saipan for the Philippines after the police discovered that the suspect has apparently removed her personal belongings from the staff house at Gold Beach Hotel, leaving behind only her dirty clothes and a few stuff toys.
