At Issue: The Omnibus Economic Reform Act languishes in the Senate needs a Wake-Up Call!

Our View: In the absence of alternative legislation, Senate must approve the bill as soon as possible.

“The tide waits for no man” a famous traditional chief once stated alluding to the irreversible hands of time. Such is equally applicable in terms of the dire need to positively consider the Omnibus Economic Reform Act now in the hands of the upper-chamber in the 12th CNMI Legislature.

It should be understood (if our men of wisdom have kept pace with business activities in the private sector) that the volume of business is projected to drop even further towards year’s end. This setback would translate into less revenue generation for the local coffers. It would also mean far less jobs for the hundreds of high school graduates who’d be marching out of their commencement exercises beginning today!

This economic condition is going to get worse before it gets any better. It means a further tightening of our belts with more serious cuts of non-essential expenditures. There’s no room to accommodate the “picnic” attitude. We can’t continue partying when our house is on fire! Nor is there really any room at all to bask in the superficial notion that all is well in the economic revival in the Land of the Rising Sun.

It stands to reason, therefore, that we take a proactive attitude in helping ourselves for only those who swallow the bitter pill of difficult decisions would succeed in the end.
This mañana attitude must be scrapped permanently. No longer can we afford the habit of “planning by” eventualities. We need to learn to “plan for” events that are coming down the pike. We need to pull ourselves out of the old ways. Entrenchment is the very culprit that fuels our wonderful sense of mañana.

If leaders can basically envision the future by creating it through positive policies, then we’d like to think that the Senate is up to par with its fiduciary obligation to cultivate brighter tomorrows for our jobless people today and those who will be leaving high school campuses beginning today. We are confident you can rise to the occasion and the most appropriate time to so is today via the approval of the Omnibus Economic Reform Act.
Let’s all converge in the interest of staving the Asian Flu. We doubt that you wish to leave a legacy of joblessness and helplessness for the multitude. Si Yuus Maase`!
