The Tinian Mayor’s office is soliciting the support of the public in funding the airfare of participants for the National Mock Trial Championship to be held in North Carolina.

The Tinian mock trial team, champions of the CNMI-wide mock trial competition, is sending some 17 people to the national mock trial event.

Mayor’s Office Spokesperson Phillip Mendiola-Long has particularly asked travel agencies to at least reduce the regular $1,540 per person airfare or grant the travel fees as donation to the youth group.

The Public School System has agreed to shoulder the airfare of eight students and two chaperones.

The team is still looking at venues to generate funds for the remaining people without airfares.

The mayor’s office said the per diem alone amounts to $15,000 and does not include car rental expenses.

Though the mayor’s office is prepared to cover the per diem, the team is hoping it can get significant discounts or even donations for the airfare.

“We honestly do not know what else to do and are seeking your help and pull with the travel industry to get these kids to South Carolina,” Mr. Long said.
