Former Rep. Melvin O. Faisao is eyeing another bid for a House seat at next year’s elections after he failed to seek a fresh term last November.

He said he would consult his family before announcing his intention to run in the 2001 polls as one of the six representatives of Precinct 3 on Saipan to the lower house.

“My option is still open. If I do decide to run again, I’ll make sure that I have the support of my family,” he said in an interview.

Mr. Faisao, who now works at the public liaison office of the Governor’s Office, did not say when he will formally submit his application to the Republican Party, adding only that he will announce it before the end of the year.

The former congressman, who served two consecutive two-year terms as House member, was one of the six Republican candidates in his district, but he was the only who failed to get elected last November. Independent bet Rep. Malua T. Peter won a fresh mandate to join the five other GOP lawmakers.

Aside from his government job, Mr. Faisao is also an officer of the committee backing the candidacy of Lt. Gov. Jesus R. Sablan to the highest elected post in the CNMI.

He assured his volunteer work for Mr. Sablan will not affect his House bid when the campaign for the 2001 polls begin.

Several prominent individuals have already announced their intention to run for seats during the next general elections, including Rep. David M. Apatang who is seeking the GOP’s nomination as one of its candidates for the two Saipan seats in the Senate up for grabs in 2001.

Senate Vice President Thomas P. Villagomez, whose four-year term ends in January 2002, has agreed to be the running mate of Mr. Sablan to face other GOP bets in the primary, representative to Washington Juan N. Babauta and Rep. Diego T. Benavente.
