Economy: It’s all up to us!
At Issue: Opportunities for the “New Economy” born by the Information Technology is knocking on our front door.
Our View: It’s a chance of a lifetime lest we’d be playing catch-up for the balance of the first quarter of new millennium.
It is very encouraging that the House Leadership has taken the lead to revive and expand investment in these isles beyond apparel and tourism or conventional investments.
It is willing to remove the mountain of
conventional wisdom in the so-called “old economy” to make way for the “new economy:” that now dictates global business conduct. It has taken the proverbial first step. Indeed, it is proactive leadership at its best.
Much remains to be done to open-up opportunities on DotComs and our version of high-tech investments in this laboratory of democracy. The NMI’s comparative advantage hasn’t been fully explored by prospective high-tech investors. It is our responsibility to trumpet this message in Silicone Valley or new investors on high-tech industries.
When the NMI lays-out the groundwork to lift the first shovel of groundbreaking in this industry, we should be able to realize greater investment (wealth creation) and jobs creation (meaningful employment opportunities) for our people in this resource-poor archipelago.
A major leap forward in this direction will definitely require major shift in education and training programs for our people. Emphasis would have to focus, to a large extent, on relevant courses and training programs that this industry would require over the long-term. It behooves all concerns to begin exploring what changes in education and training need realignment at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
The future is NOW! It is up to us to roll-out the red carpet to usher in the benefits of Information Technology. If we fail to do it today then there’s the likelihood that we would be playing catch-up with the rest of the global community down the stretch. Let’s capitalize on the new economy. It’s the only way to put teeth to our pronouncements on economic diversification. Let’s do it now, today! Si Yuus Maase`!
