A crew of the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation yesterday rushed installation of a new power pole in a strategic area along As Lito Road to replace the old one that had been badly damaged in a car crash the other night.

Pamela Mathis, CUC information officer, said the bottom of the old pole was so “shattered” that it could collapse within hours and endanger residents in the area.

There were no details on the traffic accident, but Ms. Mathis said it is a standard operating procedure for CUC to charge to the driver of the vehicle the costs of the pole replacement and a new transformer as well as labor and use of equipment.

He may also be asked to pay for the loss of revenues resulting from the accident as some houses and establishments near the scene of the accident were without power since it happened last Monday night.

Yesterday afternoon, utility crews worked on the new pole and cut off power for one hour in large areas of southern Saipan to transfer the high voltage wires from the damaged pole which carries a primary electrical distribution system.
