Continental boosts Guam-Tokyo service
As a result of increased customer demand, Continental Micronesia yesterday disclosed that it would operate three additional flights every week between Guam and Tokyo.
This will result in a 10 percent increase in Continental Micronesia seats in the market, according to Walter Dias, staff vice-president of sales and promotions. The airline currently operates two DC-10 flights per day in the Guam-Tokyo route.
Beginning April 7, 2000, Continental Micronesia will operate a Boeing 737-800 on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. The flight will depart Guam at 4:30 p.m. and arrive in Narita at 7:10 p.m. Departure from Narita will be at 8:10 p.m. with arrival in Guam at 12:45 a.m.
“Customer demand has been strong from the Kanto region during the past few quarters. As we have always stated, Continental Micronesia will add capacity to those markets which demonstrate consistently strong demand. We are very enthusiastic about adding capacity in the Tokyo market. We feel this will benefit the local market and
strengthen Guam’s position as premier destination for the Japan market,” said Mr. Dias.
Mr. Dias earlier met with the leadership of the House of Representatives where they discussed the possibility of granting tax breaks and other incentives to the airline in hopes to help the carrier sell the CNMI in key Asian markets as well as to reduce airfare between the islands and prime destinations.
According to Mr. Dias, both the CNMI and Continental must work together in promoting the islands in Japan, which he said would create the “biggest impact” in the local tourism industry.
Meanwhile, a Continental Micronesia Boeing 727 flight operating from Guam to Yap suffered a partial landing gear collapse when it landed at the airport.
The 96 passengers and seven crew made an orderly exist from the aircraft and no injuries were reported. Continental Micronesia has arranged local hotel accommodations for those passengers scheduled to go to Palau.
