Suspect pleads not guilty in guest worker slaying

Filipino nonresident worker Juanito Alcantara pled not guilty before the Superior Court yesterday in connection with the rape and murder of Hui Yang, 24, a Chinese national.

Chief Criminal Prosecutor Kevin Lynch has filed seven counts of criminal charges against
Mr. Alcantara which include first degree murder, premeditated murder, murder in the first degree, aggravated assault and battery, assault with a dangerous weapon in connection with the death of Ms. Hui; assault and disturbing the peace charges on the cashier of Viva Poker Eden Lozano.

Ms. Hui, a casino waitress, was found dead in a grassy area at the northern part of West Tinian Airport, several days after she was reported missing.

Meanwhile, the three suspects in the slaying of Filipino guest worker Caesario Valerio — Thomas Ch. Basa, 17, Anthony B. Magofna, 18, and Eugene B. Repeki Jr.  pled not guilty to three counts of criminal charges before the court during an arraignment yesterday.

They are facing one count of second degree murder, one count of voluntary manslaughter and one count of aggravated assault and battery.

Mr. Valerio, who was on duty as a security guard at Courtney’s Plaza, was attacked to death by the three men on May 4, 1999.
