House resolution wants NMI to seek CDBG funding
The House of Representatives yesterday set the motion for the government to avail close to $1.4 million in federal funding for housing loans, community development and other infrastructure needs in the CNMI.
A joint resolution was adopted at the session authorizing Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio to apply for the financial aid under the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), Home Investment Partnership Grant (HOME), and Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG).
The application outlining CNMI’s action plan on the program for this year will be submitted before the deadline on June 1 to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
A copy of the resolution, which now heads to the Senate for adoption, will accompany the application package, according to the Northern Marianas Housing Corporation which is the lead agency administering the funds.
About $931,000 of the total sum will be earmarked for CDBG projects on the island, including infrastructure development, community facilities and passenger transportation for people with disabilities.
Meanwhile, the lower house also adopted another joint resolution urging the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation to reduce its power reconnection fee from $75 to $25 which it said should be the minimal fee for such a simple process.
Lawmakers said the fee is “encumbering to residential consumers because it is usually due to financial difficulty that such consumers were unable to pay their bill in the first place.”
The move comes amid complaints from some CUC customers asking for reconnection that the fee being charged by the government-owned utility corporation for the service is too high.
