Basa enters plea agreement in carjacking case
He was with a group of men involved in a carjacking incident on July 11, 1999 and did not make any effort to report that a crime was being committed at that time.
And for this, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has filed a case against Francisco N. Basa for a federal crime that has a maximum penalty of three years imprisonment.
However, Mr. Basa may face a lighter sentence after he entered into a plea agreement yesterday with the U.S. Attorney’s Office. He was later on released on a $25,000 unsecured bond.
U.S. Assistant Attorney Dave Wood said he recognized the effort of Mr. Basa in trying to stop his close friends and relatives from committing the crime who at the same time supported their morale.
“The government made a reasonable plea agreement here, one that will underscore the type of punishment that must be imposed on this kind of conduct,” Mr. Wood said.
Mr. Basa’s sentencing has been set on May 23, 2000.
Earlier, three detainees, Melvin N. Basa, Jeffrey Basa and Jeronimo S. Ada, who were the main accused in the case, pled guilty to the crimes of carjacking and affecting commerce by robbery.
Investigation showed that on July 11, 1999, the group ran away with a 1992 Mazda pickup of Wu Guo Quing, a Chinese national.
Mr. Wu ran after his vehicle. About 200 yards after, the pickup stopped and another vehicle driven by another group including Frankie Basa pulled up from behind. Within minutes, the men on board these two vehicles started beating up the victim.
Not satisfied, they took Mr. Wu’s pickup and proceeded to Jia Jia store in Chalan Piao where they robbed a couple, Fleming Horumi Ueda and wife Jia Jia Jeng Ueda. As expected, they destroyed the store, stabbed Mr. Ueda and fled with $500. (LFR)
