New Superior Court judge named soon
Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio disclosed Saturday he is drawing close to coming up with a new appointment who will fill the vacant slot at the CNMI Superior Court.
Mr. Tenorio said a big number of practicing lawyers have signified intention to fill the vacant position at the Superior Court but promptly added that the list had been narrowed down to six names.
The governor added that he is now in the process of choosing between three potential nominees from six individuals whose professional backgrounds have been carefully reviewed.
The CNMI chief executive assured, however, that the appointee will be coming from outside the government and should be currently practicing the profession.
“I want the new judge to have fresh ideas and really have a feel of how it is practicing law these days,” Mr. Tenorio told reporters during the formal launching of the Year 2000 Presidential Awards for Filipinos Overseas by the Philippine Consulate over the weekend.
He refused to reveal the names of candidates to the post. He only said a new Superior Court judge will be named soon after his office completes reviewing pertinent documents.
But sources from the administration said among those being considered for the post include Robert Naraja, Eric Smith and David Wiseman.
Mr. Tenorio said his office is also presently coordinating with the Northern Marianas Bar Association for the final selection of the new Superior Court judge.
The governor is soliciting comment from the bar association on their nomination before making a final decision.
“I have received numerous letters of support for the nominees to the Superior Court and I consider all of them to be qualified to serve,” Mr. Tenorio said.
He disclosed that he met with some of the judges, as well as with members of the CNMI Bar Association, to get their opinion on who should sit as new Superior Court judge.
