DD Council applauds Attao’s accomplishment
December 15, 1999 was a special day for Cynthia Attao. At her Kagman III homestead, Ms. Attao was surrounded by well-wishers who were there to take part in her groundbreaking ceremony.
To open the ceremony, Governor’s Developmental Disabilities Council (DD Council) Chair Pedro T. Nakatsukasa and Executive Director Thomas J. Camacho spoke of Ms. Attao’s determination to become even more independent and be part of the community with a home of her own.
Ms. Attao’s parents, George and Margarita Duenas, were honored for their untiring support of 37 years to Cynthia to become the strong and determined person that she is today.
Ms. Attao’s groundbreaking ceremony would not have been possible without the assistance of the Northern Marianas Housing Corporation (NMHC) for processing her loan application, US Farmers Home Administration of the US Department of Agriculture for approving Ms. Attao’s home loan, and the DD Council for their initiative in seeing her through with her project.
Sablan Construction Enterprises started on the construction of Ms. Attao’s house Dec. 1st. It will take approximately six months to complete the two-bedroom house project.
Ms. Attao’s, who utilizes a wheelchair, has made arrangements with Sablan Construction to make her new home ADA accessible.
The DD Council continues to support self-determination activities of CNMI residents with developmental disabilities, and one way of doing just that is to promote home ownership.
