Members of the Governor’s Aviation Task Force made pitch last week with Air Nauru officials on the need for a direct Saipan-Manila service, according to Dave M. Sablan, chair of the Marianas Visitors Authority.

During the meeting, Mr. Sablan pledged the CNMI’s support for the service once it pushes through. He said the CNMI government will also help Air Nauru should it decide to take the routes dropped earlier by Continental Micronesia.

The task force was asking Air Nauru to consider Saipan-Palau-Manila and Manila-Palau-Saipan.

Air Nauru presented last week to the travel industry its new look for developing Manila as a hub for Central Pacific tours.

A feature of the evening was the first screening in Manila of Air Nauru’s award winning film “Air Nauru’s Pacific Treasures”. The film has won a prestigious award for the Best Corporate Production for 1999 in the Australian Cinematographers Society Awards.

Speaking in Manila, the CEO of the airline, Owen Coughlan, said, “Air Nauru is very proud of its new look and particularly our new film. . .It reflects the eras of influence of Spain, Germany and Britain in much of the Pacific, as well as war-time history, religion, local culture, nightlife.”

“We are delighted with the support that the airline’s new look and promotional drive has received at the launches in Guam and Manila as well as in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, as it establishes itself more strongly in the region.”

The approach has been maintained through the production of new uniforms, brochures, distinctive posters and postcards, showing relatively unexplored destinations in Micronesia.

Guests included leading members of governments and the tourism industry from the Philippines and the Pacific region.

“Air Nauru’s Pacific Treasures” will again be presented in Suva, Fiji on December 8, 1999.
