With an average of 10 fatalities each year from car crashes in the Northern Marianas, local officials have raised concerns on the deadly repercussions of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs on most of the island’s major roads.

Yesterday, Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio signed a proclamation declaring December as Drunk and Drugged Driving (3D) Prevention Month in the CNMI as part of the government’s efforts to make the roads and streets safer for motorists and pedestrians.

Since Christmas season is around the corner, the month is the best time to promote road safety and raise awareness on the dangers of driving while intoxicated through anti-impaired driving programs and policies.

“I would like to encourage our people in the community that if you are going out for partying, please have somebody be a designated driver so that you can enjoy our holiday season,” the governor said at a signing ceremony held outside the judicial complex in Susupe.

Traffic officers and police were on hand to witness the event traditionally observed in the Commonwealth every year.

According to government statistics, 112 people have died from 1986 to 1998 from car accidents, most of which were related to alcohol-impaired driving. Last year, six auto-related deaths occurred, two of whom were drunk.

“I am urging each and every citizen in the CNMI not to drive while intoxicated,” said Public Safety Commissioner Charles W. Ingram as he noted the rising number of car crash victims across the nation.

During the whole month of December, DPS will lead the campaign to prevent occurrence of these deaths on the island through community-based programs involving consumer education, effective laws and strong law enforcement.

On Dec. 17, car headlights will be on the entire day in support of the “National Lights on For Life Day” in memory of those who have been killed or injured by impaired drivers, according to the proclamation.

“The holidays are approaching,” said Mr. Tenorio. “I ask each member of our community to welcome the new millennium in peace and harmony and to make our Commonwealth safe by not driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.”
